{"id":40,"date":"2015-10-23T18:18:46","date_gmt":"2015-10-23T17:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lisariemers.com\/?p=40"},"modified":"2024-05-28T11:34:15","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T10:34:15","slug":"101-things-i-heard-at-intranetnow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lisariemers.com\/index.php\/2015\/10\/23\/101-things-i-heard-at-intranetnow\/","title":{"rendered":"43-101 things I heard at #IntranetNow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the week or so that&#8217;s followed the wonder that was the <a href=\"http:\/\/intranetnow.co.uk\/\">2015 Intranet Now Conference<\/a> I have been mulling over my notes.<\/p>\n<p>I have enjoyed going back through the <a href=\"http:\/\/intranetnow.co.uk\/speakers\/\">presentations<\/a>, trying not to forget the many things I heard, digesting things to become things I&#8217;ve learned and connecting with attendees over <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lisariemers\">on the Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/lisariemers\">on LinkedIn <\/a><\/p>\n<p>I already wrote about <a href=\"http:\/\/lisariemers.com\/index.php?\/42-things-i-learned-at-the-intranetnow-conference\/\">42ish things I heard<\/a> there &#8211; with a morning full of lightning-quick talks and some longer debates, there are obviously MANY more than that &#8211; here&#8217;s a few more!<\/p>\n<p><strong>43-47ish We, like He-Man, have the POWER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While at times it may feel like our business systems <del>are terrible<\/del> aren&#8217;t up to the standard that we would like them to be, we as digital communicators, intranet managers, enablers of change, webmasters and\/or portal wizards play a vital role in the success (or failure) of the projects we are part of.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/94.136.40.103\/~lisariemers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/jamessteptwo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/94.136.40.103\/~lisariemers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/jamessteptwo1-1024x698.jpg\" alt=\"My take on James Robertson's talk @James_Steptwo\" width=\"474\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lisariemers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/jamessteptwo1-1024x698.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lisariemers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/jamessteptwo1-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lisariemers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/jamessteptwo1.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/james_steptwo\">James Robertson<\/a> on being the conduit for sharing good stuff, well.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>48-52 Design adds value<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not about making things look &#8220;pretty&#8221;, but great design can be the difference between users loving, or grudgingly tolerating your site. As well as discussing the ways of building a perfect business case, which hits the needs of employees at all levels of your organisation, Sara discussed an interesting study about compliance. The further away an office is from HQ, the less likely they are to comply with your rules. Captured beautifully by Antonio Salgado, Capturise, via the Intranet Now Conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>91-98ish Governance, training, workflows, find your family, wine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were so many things we covered in the afternoon sessions, though my top takeaways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have a governance policy, but actually a process to follow it up, with people that are empowered to do it.<\/li>\n<li>make connections with people in and outside of your organisation and see them often, to remind yourself why you&#8217;re doing this<\/li>\n<li>try and get someone to have a look at your search logs and make some recommendations<\/li>\n<li>steal lovingly from other people &#8211; most intranet-types are happy to share what they can to help you<\/li>\n<li>one word search doesn&#8217;t have to be a problem<\/li>\n<li>always make time for wine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>99-100 &#8211; Have the wisdom to know the difference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/james_steptwo\">James Robertson<\/a> is a pretty inspirational chap, and gave me some great advice in the bar afterwards. I managed to reel off a list of challenges, many of which are completely outside of my control, and he pointed this out and reminded me that there are things I DO have power over, and that we can achieve great things when we focus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>101 &#8211; Sketchnotes are a thing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks again to Wedge and Brian for my prize copy of Jane McConnell&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digital-workplace-trends.com\/contents\/\">The Organization in the Digital Age<\/a>, largely for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lisariemers\/status\/653873181162389504\">my tweet<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/intranetnow.co.uk\/speakers\/#paul\">Paul Zimmerman<\/a>&#8216;s talk on the Intranet of Things.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#8217;t realised, until my first write-up was retweeted by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/francisrowland\">Francis Rowland<\/a>, that there&#8217;s an official term &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23sketchnotes&amp;src=typd\">sketchnotes<\/a> &#8211; for scrawling visual notes.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen them around, usually created by skilled illustrators, but didn&#8217;t realise they were, in themselves, a medium. So there&#8217;s an unexpected takeaway too.<\/p>\n<p>Phew. Thanks for reading this far!
